As this month comes to a close and the festivities of June are released back into the calendar, may we continue to hold the significance of all that we’ve remembered. Even as we move into the new-old days where we can choose to sit in a cafe again, jump on a plane and take a vacation, or head to crowded theaters, ballparks and studios, it almost feels possible to forget what we just went through. It almost feels hard to imagine some areas near and far are still going through incredibly difficult times. Wild how adaptive and quick to adjust we can be though. But also wild how we can forget what we’ve learned, and maybe that’s just the way it is. Not good, not bad, just common.

Welcome yourself to whatever is happening and know that this too, shall pass…again, and again and again. Having some sort of regular practice, like Yoga or Qigong to ground and remind us that we are right here, in the presence of something useful, is, well, useful!

I’m amazed at how we live in such a mental space, where we can become frustrated with hearing the truth, or impatient when hearing news that isn’t what we hoped for, or simply dulled when we hear a different perspective that is contrary to our habitual relationship to the past. I’ve had all 3 of these this week!

I remember celebrating July 4th as a day to party and how it felt like it represented a day for everyone to unite and celebrate our awesome history of breaking free. But then, at some point and more evidently so these recent years, I understand this convenient narrative of our country’s forming isn’t such a celebration by all people.

Echoes of this story may never go away. War, slavery and brutal suffering brought us here and we celebrate our own ignorance every time we celebrate where we’ve made progress. Yes, we have made progress and that’s the good news that I do wish to celebrate and move forward.

What amazes me even more though, is that we have the ability to do something differently. Our human nature to reflect, discern and dream good things into reality is also a great part of our being. While we can’t change the events of the past, we can bring healing today with visions of a more conscious way into tomorrow.

We can recognize national bad habits that have upheld a spoon-fed story and we can relearn ways to express the joy of this life by unlocking the lies. We can do our best to know the truth and uphold the dignity of lost lives that have been trampled on and walked over. We can become humbled by this truth and learn to be more compassionate beings that care for one another. We have ancient wisdom that can guide us and map this predictable, lifelong pattern of the human condition.

I struggle with breaking free from some stories and know that our basic instincts tend to say, “preserve life at all costs!” Life is rich and full, and our mind and heart can’t always handle so much. Our nervous systems can only manage what we’ve trained it to manage. I’ve accepted that the desire for comfort, power and self-interest can leave us frozen in the fragile plateau of caring only so much for one another.

And so in some way, it’s not that there’s anything wrong in the world – we’re doing this just as we’ve evolved collectively. To help ease my mind, I get inspired to do something that I think can help. Some days, I’m not sure I need any other reason to be motivated with how I spend my time. Those days fuel me with so much energy and I’m grateful for my choices even when there never feel like there are enough hours in a day. Even when the news of the day is heavy, heartbreaking and numbing. On other days, I need to hear from you – what drives your Peace? What keeps you going that isn’t something to buy, sell or trade?
